Thanks for the feedback and symbol info.  With respect to the bug
in the shim-080828.tgz tarball:

You're correct, yesterday's (Thu, 080828) tarball was broken.  In
the process of pushing a documentation fix, I also picked up some
transitional internal sources for the shim as well by mistake.
I've pushed a new tarball that fixes the problem; please feel 
free to try it out.

I'm leaving now for the weekend, and I'll look into the database
symbol questions you've raised next Tuesday when I return.
