With regard to memory usage for the shim:

You should see great improvement in memory utilization with today's
release, shim-090717.tgz .

Memory use, once startup is completed, is reasonably close to steady
state; only commands and in particular the key attributes such as order
variables, order ids and the other tick id types are tabled as
permanent memory.  All other events, and in particular all messages,
are released at the end of each time slot.
